What is a GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide)?
It is a hormone that slows digestion, reduces appetite, helps the body produce more insulin, and reduces the amount of sugar produced by the liver.
Ok, so how does semaglutide and tirzepatide work?
These two medications are GLP-1 “mimics” - which means that they “trick” our bodies into thinking we have higher levels of the natural hormone, GLP-1.
When these two medications are present in our bodies, they
§ Increase Insulin production (this helps lower blood sugar levels)
§ Slow stomach emptying, which does two things:
§ Makes us feel full sooner, helping to control portion sizes
§ Keeps us feeling full longer which helps avoid unhealthy snacks, or eating too often
Once we’ve eaten enough food, we should feel satisfied and a signal in the brain should say “I have had enough!” Sometimes our gut no longer signals the brain the way it should, which can cause us to keep eating, leading to weight gain. GLP1 Mimics amplify that gut signal so we can know when to stop eating.
