What is a GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide)?

It is a hormone that slows digestion, reduces appetite, helps the body produce more insulin, and reduces the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

Ok, so how does semaglutide and tirzepatide work?

These two medications are GLP-1 “mimics” - which means that they “trick” our bodies into thinking we have  higher levels of the natural hormone, GLP-1.

When these two medications are present in our bodies, they

§  Increase Insulin production (this helps lower blood sugar levels)

§  Slow stomach emptying, which does two things:

§  Makes us feel full sooner, helping to control portion sizes

§  Keeps us feeling full longer which helps avoid unhealthy                 snacks, or eating too often

Once we’ve eaten enough food, we should feel satisfied and a signal in the brain should say “I have had enough!”   Sometimes our gut no longer signals the brain the way it should, which can cause us to keep eating, leading to weight gain.   GLP1 Mimics amplify that gut signal so we can know when to stop eating.

Injectable Weight Loss Medication Consent Form

I hope to give you some guidance and support along the way – I am excited about getting you started!  Please check the boxes for the following statements and ask questions if you do not understand.

I understand that I am starting a physician directed weight loss program with the compounded medication semaglutide or tirzepatide that I will inject on a weekly basis.

Statement Regarding Compounded Medications

Please read and sign below, thank you!

I understand that the semaglutide and tirzepatide I am receiving from Dr. Kate Pierce is a compounded form created by a compounding pharmacy, Grand Avenue Pharmacy, out of Texas.  The FDA does not formally approve compounded medications.

Novo Nordisk is the company that has FDA approval of the injectable brand names Ozempic and Wegovy.

Eli Lilly is the company that has FDA approval of the injectable brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound.

These drugs are no longer on the FDA Drug Shortage List, however, they can be compounded and sold by other pharmacies without FDA approval.  The formulations from Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly and a compounding pharmacy are similar but slightly different as required by patent laws and corporate ownership.  Please be aware that the compounded form through Grand Avenue Pharmacy (GAP) is from a base powder formula and does not contain any salts.  GAP’s compounded products are rigorously quality tested and are equally effective as the Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly products.  We are able to dispense compounded formulations in order to tailor dosing for patients that is not commercially available, and that is necessary to avoid side effects.
